tin-can-telephone

The string between the cans we used to talk
through snapped and hit me in the eye today

knocked out the scale that enlarged the speck
in yours to timber size & now I find I’m lost.

If I can’t see your flaws or hear the mutters
that once passed for conversation, what remains?

I hold an empty tin, a bit of string;
the tintinnabulation in my ear has ceased.

I catch no words, am cheat of thought beyond
the possibility of shapes of things to come.

A tune I used to hum is gathering
momentum on my lips, I feel the buzz

surrounding me of poets who sing only
of love’s presence, met one yesterday and

couldn’t think of what to say. Too fluent I’d
become in retro-specks. So now’s the time,

it’s obvious, betrayed of thought, to learn
a brighter tongue. So far, I know the words

for get and give, for let and live, and while
the space between us grows and falls away

I witness something tender that accommodates
and has no fear to speak aloud my name.

South
she walks
with sunset
in her hair and
nothing more to
prove or say
while words
like flagstones
shimmer gilt-edged
on the path
ahead.

East
enticed
no more by
hero myths, he
tunes his ear to
harmonies
pulsing
silver through
the fragile webs
of dew-soaked
morning.

North
west of
Abbot’s Sound
a crow flies straight
to higher ground
his chalk line
drawn, he
plumbs two hearts
their depths to a
single point
must come.

I know a love
that doesn’t show
or force his hand
who lifts this weighted
heart to kiss as if
it were a hummingbird
then sets me down
to go my way,
a muscled love
that rises like the mist
across a mountain lake
and feeds the texture
of my dreams with vast
realities to which I wake
and find the evidence
beside me, ever-growing,
in the shape, the touch
and smile, thrust of you.

In the moment that the world

softens you return to me in
states of wonder raised by
doubt and continental fault lines.

In the moment that the crowd
reshapes you show yourself
to me in ways that all our
yesterdays could never reach.

In the moment that the rain
congeals to snow and ice I melt
to hear and feel you whisper
waiting’s over, I am here.

In this moment past and future
merge, no fault lines to divide us
crowds disperse and flow you to
me in this brace of winter snow.

The Wakening

Elaine Stirling, erotic poetry, expanding metaphors, new love, romance

Do you remember
the night we set fire
to the tablecloth in that
swank Marbella restaurant?

How the waiter came
running, only to find you
and me arc-welding iron
sparks of rose and wild grape
wrought filigree o’er plates
of pulpo so fresh caught,
you thought you heard
them still conversing.

Uproariously drunk, we
left Chez What-the-frig to
find that stretch of beach
again where Guardia Civil
had said of us how well we
fit. You do not know the half
of it, I giggled, tipply from your
kisses and the outline of your
hand still pressed upon a place
wherein I rode, for multiple
eternities, the moons of
all the Jupiters.

This talk of memories
would break my heart if I
were not now tracing every
word upon your naked calf
with fingertip, the tangled sheets
and scent of you sweet dreaming
I can tell the way you smile
you are reliving heights of
ecstasy we have yet still to
ride and they are pulling us
like flood gates of a levee
draw the river in to power
mills and factories;

the industry of love
and all its metaphors
wash over me, I straddle
you, a shameless baroness,
to rob you of your sleep. My
breast, erected nipple dips
into your ear, your moan turns
into gasp, you turn your head
and, smiling, reach to greet
this burgeoning, this ever
new awakening.
