The backbone is the center of the mind
that looks beyond the crises of a world
to greater possibilities in time.

Effortless when loving thoughts align,
they multiply like baby ferns unfurled;
the backbone is the center of the mind.

A flagpole to true harmony the spine
supports a flag of rippling hope, seed-pearled
to greater possibilities in time.

Rigidity gives way to things sublime
realities that circle midst a whirl;
the backbone is the center of the mind.

To cluster thoughts, the power that is mine
grows aggregate and natural, uncurled
to greater possibilities in time.

Emotions flowing easy, the supine
grants liberty to every boy and girl;
the backbone is the center of the mind
to greater possibilities in time.

The 19-line villanelle, despite its French name, began in medieval Italy where bards employed the strict rhyme and repeating lines to challenge one another with pastoral themes. From there it spread to France and then to England, maintaining its light-hearted spirit despite the challenges of writing one.
